Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ:NFLX), even though it started as a provider of on-demand streaming media, announced in 2011 that it planned to purchase original content for its subscription streaming service. In 2012, Netflix took eight episodes of "Lilyhammer," which aired in Norway earlier, and made them available in North America.
